“The thing about them is they are so ‘no place’. The idea of being in a plane is so much about being between places and that’s part of that state of mind I wanted to try and photograph. It’s so much about the in-between time and a mixture of feelings and emotions; I thought maybe I could make portraits of people in that state of mind you get into when you fly.”

“L’important à leur propos, c’est qu’elles sont vraiment « de nulle part ». Quand on est dans un avion, on est dans un entre-deux, et c’est en partie l’état d’esprit que je voulais retrouver et représenter. C’est vraiment à propos du temps des intervalles, et d’un mélange de sentiments et d’émotions ; je pensais que je pourrais peut-être faire des portraits de gens dans cet état d’esprit qui vous saisit quand vous voyagez.”

For Passengers, John Schabel used a Nikon 35 mm film camera and a 500 mm reflex lens with a 2x teleconverter, giving him 1,000 mm of zoom.
